DIMACS to Lead MPE beyond 2013

[December, 2013] Scientific societies, universities, research institutes, MPE logoand organizations all over the world joined together to dedicate 2013 to a year-long international initiative called Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 (MPE2013). MPE2013 held events across the globe to showcase the ways in which the mathematical sciences can help to understand and address some of the world's most pressing problems. As 2013 draws to a close, DIMACS and the international MPE2013 project issued press releases announcing the continuation of the MPE2013 efforts as “Mathematics of Planet Earth” (MPE) under leadership at DIMACS.

DIMACS recently launched the Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013-Plus (MPE 2013+) program to propel efforts beyond 2013 and to involve a broad community of scientists in laying the groundwork for a long-term effort to surmount the sustainability problems facing our planet. MPE 2013+ activities will be organized around six clusters of topics: management of natural resources, sustainable human environments, natural disasters, data-aware energy use, global change, and education for planet earth of tomorrow.

MPE2013+ will kickoff with the workshop “Mathematics of Planet Earth: Challenges and Opportunities” held at Arizona State University on January 7-10, 2014. The workshop aims to expose students and junior researchers to the challenges facing our planet, the role of the mathematical sciences in addressing those challenges, and the opportunities to get involved in the effort. Each of the six clusters will have a kickoff workshop held in 2014 or 2015 and will include follow-on activities through at least 2016.
