A Conference in honor of the 70th birthday of Endre Szemerédi

It is hard to believe but Endre Szemerédi is turning 70 in 2010. The Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics and the János Bolyai Mathematical Society are organizing a conference in the summer of 2010 to celebrate this occasion. The conference will be held August 2-9, 2010 Budapest. It is well separated from the International Congress of Mathematicians to be held August 19-27 in Hyderabad, India.

Endre obtained fundamental results in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science that influenced these areas dramatically and have also had a significant impact on other areas like Number Theory and Ergodic Theory. His proof of the Erdos and Turan 1936 conjecture that any set of integers with positive upper density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions has been called the single most influential result in 20th century combinatorics. Szemeredi's masterful solutions to many open problems, his deep theorems, and ingenious proofs have shaped the areas of extremal combinatorics, random graph theory, combinatorial number theory, discrete geometry, and several areas of theoretical computer science.
