Launch of New DHS Center of Excellence: CCICADA

[DecemRibbon-cutting at the CCICADA openingber 2009] DIMACS is now home to the Command, Control, and Interoperability Center for Advanced Data Analysis ( CCICADA), a new DHS Center of Excellence (COE) that launched with a kick-off event at Rutgers University on December 9th and 10th. CCICADA’s researchers will seek to develop the types of data analytic capabilities that homeland security relies on to ferret out patterns and draw inferences from massive amounts of unstructured data contained in books, newspapers, reports, blogs, images, geospatial data, sensor readings, and audio and video streams. The first day of the kickoff event emphasized CCICADA research and included presentations on selected CCICADA research projects such as: extracting information from multimedia sources; data warehousing; textual entailment; applying inference to find knowledge gaps; data privacy; trustworthiness of online documents and data sources; sequential inspection methods for container inspection; and virtual worlds. The second day featured a talk by Rutgers President Richard McCormick, who described CCICADA’s role as “a sobering responsibility,” and a ceremonial ribbon cutting with DHS officials. CCICADA brings together the talents of a unique academic-industrial team, working in partnership with DHS and a wide variety of agencies in local, state, and federal government, as well as in the private sector. In addition to Rutgers, CCICADA includes 10 university and 3 industry partner institutions: Carnegie Mellon University; Howard University; Morgan State University; Princeton University; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Texas Southern University; Tuskegee University; University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign; University of Massachusetts – Lowell; University of Southern California; Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, AT&T Labs – Research; and Geosemble Technologies.
