Mathematical Mayhem: A DIMACS Detective Tale
[May 2013] If you passed through DIMACS in early May 2013, you
may have been one of the many people wondering, “What happened
here?”
No one, however, wondered this more than the 8 students enrolled in
“CrIME: Criminal Investigation through Mathematical Examination,” an
honors seminar taught by DIMACS Associate Director Gene Fiorini. The
scene of toppled chairs, “blood splatter”, coffee spills, and
footprints – all enclosed within crime scene tape – were part of the
seminar’s final exam in which students had to crack a staged
Spillane-style case.
Read more about the student sleuths and their effort to solve the
mathematical murder mystery in a Rutgers Today article.
