Abstract:

The evolving National Information Infrastructure (NII) represents a seamless integration of existing and future networks. Users in many promising new applications over NII, like digital libraries, telemedicine and distance learning, need to access information from remote multimedia servers. A Video-On-Demand (VOD) server can be considered as a simple multimedia server. We will first discuss our effort on constructing a NII testbed at the University of Minnesota. Then a set of design issues and research results on how to design efficient VOD servers will be presented. These include methods to guarantee delay jitter-free retrieval of video streams, data placement schemes to reduce video disk access time and effective disk striping schemes for different video types. We have also investigated video allocation schemes for a given set of movies over multiple disk arrays such that an expected number of concurrent accesses for each movie can be guaranteed. A cost effective approach to serve a large number of concurrent viewers for a popular movie is also proposed.
