ABSTRACT:
Entanglement is perhaps the most non-classical aspect of quantum mechanics. It is at the core of quantum teleportation and without it no nontrivial quantum computation would be possible. However, sharing long-lived entanglement between two distant observers is technologically challenging because of the fragility of quantum information.
After defining entanglement, I shall explain how it is possible for two observers to purify an initial supply of imperfect entanglement by means of local operations and the exchange of classical information. This technique can be used to assist in the faithful transmission of quantum information over an unreliable quantum channel.
