Differential equations, in particular Partial Differential Equations (PDE's), are used to model physical phenomena such as (electromagnetic) wave propagation, heat conductance and the conductance of electric currents.

Numerical simulations of PDE's are thus an important tool to predict the behaviour of physical systems. To look at it "in reverse" the measurent of the electric-, the heat-, or the electromagnetic response of a system may be an effective way to deduce information about the "internal nature" of a system.

I shall illustrate this point of view with some examples that have applications to medical imaging, to the nondestructive testing of materials, as well as to the detection of anti-personnel mines.
