Title: Termites in the Nation's Service (part 2): More details than you wanted

Abstract:
We'll skim through the gory details of some of the cellular automata and agent based modeling of the termite/fungal pathogen interactions we discussed briefly in September. Then we'll look at how these models can be expanded to define an idea of "societal immuncompetence" and use this concept to examine the "costs" of immunity on both an individual- and population-wide scale. If there's time, we'll then take a brief look at how this concept of "total costs of immunity" is being used to determine how disease might have shaped the evolution of the societal organization of these social insects.
