Abstract:
I will discuss, mainly with reference to the malaria parasite, the meningococcus and the influenza virus, how host immune selection influences their population dynamics - leading, in certain cases, to the stable coexistence of multiple discrete antigenic types and, in others, to the sequential replacement of dominant strains.
