Abstract:

In grad school we think of ourselves as specializing in a single area of math, but often chasing a research problem can take us all over the place. When this happens it can be helpful to have friends in other disciplines! I'm going to talk about two small but sweet combinatorial results that helped some other grad students with their (not at all combinatorial) research. I'll also talk a little bit about my experiences with research throughout the talk, and what I've seen of the transition from just doing homework exercises to doing original work.
