Title: Valuations of classical sequences

Speaker: Victor Moll, Tulane University

Date: Thursday, November 17, 2011 5:00pm

Location: Hill Center, Room 705, Rutgers University, Busch Campus, Piscataway, NJ

Abstract:

For a prime p and a positive integer x, the p-adic valuation of x is the highest power of p that divides x. The goal of the talk is to present a small collection of examples of p-adic valuations of classical sequences xn. Discrete objects attached to these p-adic sequences, usually help in conjecturing their long-time behavior. Examples include Fibonacci, Stirling and Catalan numbers, as well as harmonic numbers and the ASM numbers (these count the Alternating Sign Matrices).
