Abstract:
Intelligent video surveillance plays an increasingly important role in many applications. Intelligent surveillance systems use automatic image understanding techniques to extract information from the surveillance data. I will introduce the state-of-the-art video analytics technologies and the challenges in video surveillance. In addition to real-time monitoring of a scene, intelligent surveillance systems should have the capability to manage the surveillance data, perform event based retrieval, receive real time event alerts through a standard web infrastructure and extract long term statistical patterns of activity. I will demonstrate several applications including city surveillance, traffic monitoring, and retail activity analysis.
BioSketch Ying-Li Tian is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the City College of New York since 2008. She received her PhD from the Department of Electronic Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1996 and her BS and MS from TianJin University, China in 1987 and 1990. Her research experience includes video surveillance, target detection and tracking, event and activity analysis, scene understanding and facial expression recognition.
She held an associate professor position in the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China, a postdoctoral fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University, and was a research staff member at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. She was one of the inventors of the IBM Smart Surveillance Solutions (SSS) product and lead the video analytics team. She received several IBM Invention Achievement Awards, has published over 90 journal and conference papers and filed about 30 patents.
