Abstract:

Grid classes consist, roughly, of those permutations which can be divided into a specified number of pieces which satisfy local conditions. These classes have played a crucial role in the classification of small permutation classes, and are emerging as a powerful tool for the enumeration problem in general. I will report on recent results of myself together with a number of researchers, including M. H. Albert, M. D. Atkinson, M. Bouvel, R. Brignall, and N. Ruskuc.
