Speaker: Van Vu, Yale University

Location: Hill Center, Room 425, Rutgers University, Busch Campus, Piscataway, NJ

Abstract:

Let A_n be a random matrix with independent entries with mean 0 and variance 1. The law of det A_n has been a subject of study for about 70 years. In this talk, I will give a brief discussion on the long and rich history of this problem and then focus on a recent joint result with Hoi Nguyen (UPenn) which determines the law under a very mild assumption. If time allows, I will also discuss several open questions.
