Abstract:
Our life relies on various complex systems: the intricate mechanisms of our bodies, social systems in our society, and many more. The basic structure of these complex systems can often be described as a network that consists of individual elements and the interactions between them. For example: interacting genes, proteins, and metabolites form biological networks; interacting neurons form a brain network; and interacting people form a social network. In this talk, I will discuss a fundamental topic "network communities" by introducing two of my recent studies: finding highly overlapping community structure and exploiting community structure to predict virality of memes.
