Abstract:

The foundations for a new concept in cyber security, called Cyber Identity or Cy-dentity, are discussed. The concept would combine provenance, network security, and access management in a process that would secure cyber and critical infrastructure networks through high-precision identity attribution. Such a holistic approach would have two immediate benefits or advantages: first, it complements or supplements traditional protection-focused cyber security measures, such as those being investigated in most research efforts, with additional methods for securing cyber infrastructures and, second, it expands current notions of data provenance to include all aspects of digital authenticity, thereby ensuring a broad application space. More importantly, the concept offers a method for measuring, quantifying, and expressing the relative security of cyber infrastructures. An expression for a so-called testable cybersecurity metric is also proposed, which incorporates a measure for the relative value of the information contained in a network. Such a metric allows the security of any cyber infrastructure to be either determined experimentally or set through policy.
