Abstract:
Have you ever been listening to music by your favorite bands (2 Franks and a Shank, Democratic Republic of the Bongos, $\frac{(S)m^ar+ly}{Pr\Sigma(\pi)y}$, etc) and wondered how they got their names? In this talk, we'll explore ways in which we can use combinatorial techniques to come up with a closed form for the number of ways in which you can name your band. If there's time, we'll travel to the town in which Schubert was built and, using my advisor's phone, attempt to solve Fox's conjecture (or at least figure out what it says).
