Abstract

Giving an good research talk is an important skill, no matter what your specific career goals are. This presentation will give a brief overview of the different types of research talks you might have to give, and the purpose of each. I will focus on how to structure a short talk: different styles that work well, how much detail to give, and other considerations you need to think about when planning a talk. A well organized talk is aided by good presentation skills, so I will also include some pointers on public speaking.

During the second part of this presentation, REU students will split intosmall groups to work on planning the talks that they will be giving later in the week. Each group will include an experienced speaker (graduate student or postdoc from the Rutgers Math Department) to give participants more pointers and feedback. REU students: please bring a rough draft of an outline for your talk.
