This brief geophysics presentation about various aspects of Weather and Climate will intrigue and excite the young students while introducing them to the science and the wonders of the atmosphere. Hands-on demonstrations and a brief PowerPoint presentation will be used to capture their imaginations, to inspire them to seek deeper knowledge about the world around them, and to give them an insatiable thirst for science.

Title: Anthocyanins - Sun screen for plants and good for you too!

Anthocyanins are pigments produced by plants. They act as natural pH indicators, changing color with changing pH. In this presentation you will learn about how they are made, where they are found, their function in plants, and their nutritional value. You will also see the beautiful colors they form when the pH changes.

Title: The Sustainable Human Environments

This presentation aims to expose middle school and high school students to the challenges facing our planet, the role of the mathematical sciences in addressing those challenges, and the opportunities to get involved in the effort. In 1900 only 13% of the world's population lived in cities, but by 2050 that number will have risen to 70%. Rapidly growing urban environments present new and evolving challenges: growing needs for energy and water, impacts on greenhouse gases, public health, safety, and security. As city expansion continues apace, mathematical scientists can play a key role in shaping sustainable living environments.

Title: Youth Leadership Training Workshop

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars City Tech chapter is dedicated to developing leadership skills among the youth. The youth will learn how to work collaboratively, set goals, facilitate meetings, and make effective presentations. Upon completion of this workshop, participating children will be awarded Leadership certificates from the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
