Graph Theory (and its Applications to Problems of Society)

July 19 - August 6, 1999
DIMACS Center, Rutgers University, Piscataway, New Jersey

The DIMACS RESEARCH AND EDUCATION INSTITUTE (DREI), based at Rutgers University, takes the approach that research and education should work hand-in-hand. Collaborations between researchers and educators are formed by understanding each others' work and needs. To this end, the institute has designed separate programs that are focused on each group's interests, along with all-institute activities aimed at meshing the two groups. The Institute offers a three-week program of research workshops, along with an educational program for high school teachers. There will be three research workshops devoted to various topics in graph theory. Talks of both a "pure" and an "applied" nature will be featured.

Each week we will highlight several presentations that emphasize applications to problems of society, problems involving communications, transportation, medicine, urban services, etc.

Principal Investigator: Fred S. Roberts, DIMACS, Rutgers email: froberts@dimacs.rutgers.edu

Program Director: Linda Lesniak, Drew University, email: llesniak@drew.edu

Research Workshops and Research Chairs:

Week 1 "Matchings in Graphs and their Applications" (July 19-23, 1999)

Chair: Brian Alspach, Simon Fraser University, alspach@cs.sfu.ca

Week 2 "Concepts of Domination in Graphs and Directed Graphs" (July 26-30, 1999)

Chair: K. Brooks Reid, California State University at San Marcos, breid@mailhost1.csusm.edu

Week 3 "Graphs, Posets and Algorithms" (August 2-6, 1999)

Chair: Tom Trotter, Arizona State University, trotter@asu.edu

Support: Funding for on-site accommodations (based upon double occupancy for program participants), meals during the program, and partial travel support is available for 30 research mathematical/computer scientists weekly. Housing and meals for up to an additional unsupported 10 participants (based upon double occupancy) will be available.

The total number of residential research participants each week is limited to 40. Researchers who have encountered an application in the areas of the research conferences that would be particularly attractive to the participants of the parallel high school teachers conference are encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in supporting young people.

How to Apply: All interested researchers should apply by contacting the appropriate research chair no later than JANUARY 15, 1999. Also, feel free to nominate graduate students or young researchers by sending a message to the appproriate research chair.
