DIMACS Connect Institute 2001
                       Statement of Understanding

The following statement must be signed by both you and your principal;
the purpose is simply to make sure that you understand what is
expected of you as a participant, and that you are eligible for a
stipend, as well as to ensure that your principal will support you in
implementing Institute materials and ideas.

All teacher participants will receive stipends and six graduate
credits in Mathematics Education from Rutgers University upon
successful completion of the Education Program. Please read and sign
the attached DCI '01 Education Program Graduate Credit Program
Requirements form in addition to signing this form.

As a teacher participant in the DIMACS Connect Institute, I understand
that I am to be in residence at the Institute for all program days
(Monday - Friday) between July 9 and August 3, 2001 and 2 weeks in
summer 2002.  I plan to arrive no later than 1:00 p.m. each Monday and
departure no earlier than 4:00 p.m. each Friday.  I will be provided
with meals & breaks during the thirty days over the 2 summers of the
Institute program, along with housing (double occupancy) for the
twenty-four nights over the 2 summers of the program near the Rutgers
University campus.  I will also attend the one day conference held on
a Saturday in spring 2002.  Travel support may be applied for as part
of the DCI Application Form and is subject to financial need and
availability of funds.

I will be paid a stipend of $1,200 for full attendance during the
four-week program in summer 2001, payable after the summer program is
over, and $600 for full attendance during the two-week program in
summer 2002.  Notification of graduate credit will be made after the
completion of summer 2002. I will be responsible for all other costs
incurred at the hotel and/or any guest/ family members' expenses.

As principal for the school named above, I will encourage and support
the teacher named above in attending the Institute, and in efforts to
use and implement Institute ideas or materials (for example, by
introducing Institute material into the school curriculum, developing
a new course or developing a club activity).  In particular, the
participant will have adequate planning time during the school year to
develop new classroom activities or materials.  I will also try to
schedule use of the school's computer facilities to accommodate the
participant's needs.

I will approve release time for the participants to make 1 classroom
visit to another participant's classroom in each of the academic years
2001-2002 and 2002-2003.  In addition, I will support the involvement
and defray the incurred expenses of the participant and of at least
one student for the spring 2002 one-day conference held on a Saturday.

I will actively assist the participant in obtaining support for such
things as: software, texts, equipment and Internet access and travel
to DIMACS.
