BMCI '06

Prerequisites: Mathematical Sciences Teachers

  • We will not have any specific biology prerequisites for the math/CS teachers, since they will be introduced to modern topics in the biological sciences during the first two days of BMCI-2. However, we will ask them to go through a very simple ``pre-program'' web-based tutorial that we describe below.

  • Since many of the topics in computational biology/bioinformatics to be covered in the educational program are chosen from discrete mathematics (DM) and related computer science, math teachers will be expected to have some exposure to DM: counting principles; the basics of probability and conditional probability; graph theory, including cycles, paths, edge-weighted graphs, trees, and components; and strings over an alphabet.

  • Biology teachers will be introduced to appropriate DM topics during the beginning of the educational program.
