July 28 - August 15, 1997
During the summer of 1997 we offered a three-week program of research workshops
aimed at scientists from academia and industry, and open to graduate students and postdoctoral
fellows, along with an educational program for high school and college teachers, undergraduates
and others.
One of the goals for this program was "vertical integration," which we interpreted as "the integration
of many different types of people, most notably established researchers, postdoctoral fellows,
graduate students, undergraduates, and teachers from high schools in the geographic region in
which the institute took place." Thus, the program of activities for this three-week institute had a large educational component. Plenary lectures and dinner talks on topics accessible and
interesting to a very broad audience were particularly valuable in promoting discussion and
problem-solving and creating partnerships in the educational enterprise.
