HSPA Standards-Based Workshops

For High School Teachers of Mathematics
and Mathematics Specialists

These are workshops for high school teachers based on New Jersey's Core Curriculum Content Standards in mathematics as they are reflected in the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA).

Workshops will take place at the Busch Campus of Rutgers University.

Each of these full-day workshops will run from 8:30am to 3:00pm with a 45-minute break for lunch. Each workshop involves 6 hours of hands-on professional development activities.

The HSPA Standards-Based workshops are sponsored by the New Jersey Mathematics Coalition.

Workshop Descriptions:

The following two workshops together will address Standard 4 (Data Analysis, Probability and Discrete Mathematics) in the revised New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Standard 4 has four strands:

  1. Data Analysis (or Statistics)
  2. Probability
  3. Discrete Mathematics - Vertex-Edge Graphs
  4. Discrete Mathematics - Systematic
  • An Introduction to Discrete Mathematics

This workshop will provide an overview of the discrete mathematics expectations in the new standards for middle and high school students, and will focus on some of the key ideas and applications of discrete mathematics that are referred to in Standard 4. In the morning, we will discuss strategies for counting (including their use in probability), and in the afternoon, we will focus on vertex-edge graphs and their applications.

This workshop will address the last two strands.

    Presenter: Joseph G. Rosenstein

  • Integrating Statistics and Probability into Your Classroom

This workshop will address concepts related to descriptive statistics (collecting, generating, and describing data), inferential statistics (analyzing and interpreting data), and probability (randomness, fairness, and counting procedures). Simulations and analyses will use hands-on materials as well as technology (TI-83 graphing calculator and Fathom computer software).

This workshop will address the first two strands.

    Presenter: Angelo DeMattia
