The Leadership Program in Discrete Mathematics features contemporary topics in mathematics that can be used in K-12 classrooms. Program participants will learn about discrete mathematics and review and prepare materials that they can use to introduce these topics in their classes.

In the summer of 2008, three new institutes for K-8 teachers will be conducted two in New Jersey , and one in Ohio .  A program for high school teachers will also be conducted in New Jersey . Two second summer programs for previous participants in these programs will be conducted in New Jersey and Ohio . Other 2008 summer programs will be announced as funding is received. All summer programs will have school-year follow-up sessions. The Leadership Program in Discrete Mathematics can be replicated at other sites, either as a summer institute or as a sequence of one- or two-day sessions during the school year. Program participants will learn about discrete mathematics and review and prepare materials that they can use to introduce these topics in their classes.

The program is structured to encourage active participation. Those who attend will be involved directly in the learning process through use of workshop groups, participant presentations and discussions, and problem-solving sessions. Previous program participants will report on their classroom experiences and share instructional materials they have prepared and used successfully. The program will prepare teachers to introduce discrete mathematics into the classroom and the curriculum. Participants will be expected to develop instructional materials for their own use and for use by other teachers, and to present workshops on institute topics in their schools and districts.

Who Sponsors The Institutes?

The Leadership Program in Discrete Mathematics is sponsored by the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS) and Rutgers ' Center for Mathematics, Science, and Computer Education (CMSCE). Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation during 1995-2001 to develop and conduct the initial 25 institutes of the K-8 Leadership Program in Discrete Mathematics. The individual institutes are partially funded by grants in Alabama by the Alabama Commission of Higher Education; in Mississippi by Homeland Security; in Massachusetts by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education; in New Jersey by the New Jersey Department of Education and in Ohio by the Ohio Board of Regents.
