Strengthening DOK: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking with Discrete Mathematics

Mississippi State University
to be held in the Mississippi Delta region

The 10-days of July 7 – 18, 2008
plus two school year follow-up sessions

This program features contemporary topics in mathematics that can be used in K-8 classrooms. Participants will attend a ten-day institute in the summer of 2008, with two school year follow-up sessions.

Program participants will learn about discrete mathematics and its use in problem solving activities. The participants will review and prepare materials that they can use to introduce these topics in their classes, which are also aligned with the Mississippi Mathematics Framework.

About Discrete Mathematics

The program is structured to encourage active participation. Those who attend will be involved directly in the learning process through use of workshop groups, participant presentations and discussions, and problem-solving sessions. Previous program participants will report on their classroom experiences and share instructional materials they have prepared and used successfully.

The program will prepare teachers to introduce discrete mathematics into the classroom and the curriculum. Participants will be expected to develop instructional materials for their own use and to share with other teachers. For a program flyer click here.

Who Should Apply?

The institutes are designed for all K-8 teachers, including special education teachers, math coaches and specialists, resource teachers and curriculum specialists. No math prerequisites are necessary to participate.

When & Where Are The Institutes?

The summer 2008 program will take place in the Mississippi Delta region on the ten days from July 7 – 18, 2008. The dates of the school-year follow-up sessions will be determined during the summer institute.

What Other Programs Are Offered?

Similar first and second summer programs are scheduled this year. Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ will hold two first summer programs and the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio and Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY will each conduct one. Rutgers University will also be conducting a discrete mathematics program for high school teachers in New Jersey. In addition, the University of Dayton and Rutgers are conducting second summer programs for participants who have participated in previous programs.

Are There Any Fees?

There are no fees for Mississippi licensed educators.

Is There a Stipend?

Each participant will receive a stipend of $80 a day for participating in the full program. All participants will receive useful classroom materials for their participation.

What Are The Application Deadlines?

The deadline for partner school applications is Monday, June 16, 2008. After that date, all applicants will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis as long as space is available.

Is Credit Offered?

Participants will be eligible to earn 7 continuing education credits (CEU’s) from Mississippi State University for their full participation.

Developed by?

Developed by the Leadership Program in Discrete Mathematics (LPDM), Rutgers University, New Jersey with support from the National Science Foundation, the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS) and Rutgers' Center for Mathematics, Science, and Computer Education (CMSCE).  The LPDM has been replicated 55 times over the past 13 years in twelve states.
The Leadership Program in Discrete Mathematics can be replicated in your region for K-8 teachers, primary teachers, or middle school teachers, either as an institute or as a sequence of one- or two-day sessions during the school year.
