***************************************************************************** 6th International Conference on FORMAL POWER SERIES AND ALGEBRAIC COMBINATORICS FPSAC '94 DIMACS May 23-27, 1994 ***************************************************************************** Second announcement -- Registration information ***************************************************************************** TOPICS The conference focuses on algebraic combinatorics and its connections with enumeration, topology, geometry and theoretical computer science. OFFICIAL LANGUAGES English and French CONFERENCE PROGRAM Invited survey lectures, contributed presentations, problem session, software demonstrations. We aim to offer a setting for relaxed and productive professional interaction, and hope that the conference activities will expand the participants' research interests and promote collaborations. INVITED LECTURES Anders BJ\"ORNER ``Shellability -- a nonpurist view'' Ruth CHARNEY ``Metric geometry: connections with combinatorics'' Maylis DELEST ``Langages alg\'ebriques -- une visite \`a la fronti\`ere entre informatique et math\'ematiques'' Philip HANLON ``Combinatorial problems connected to the homology of Lie algebras'' David JACKSON ``Algebraic and analytic approaches for the genus series for 2-cell embeddings on orientable and nonorientable surfaces'' Gil KALAI ``The combinatorics of polytopes and the simplex algorithm'' Sergei KEROV ``Asymptotics of large random Young diagrams'' Christophe REUTENAUER ``A survey of noncommutative rational series'' Sheila SUNDARAM ``Plethysm, the partition lattice and Euler numbers'' Suggested reading lists provided by the invited speakers are available electronically (please see ``Further information'' below). CALL FOR OPEN PROBLEMS * We invite contributions of open problems which will generate discussions and collaborations. * In order to make the Problem Session more productive, participants are urged to submit problems in advance of the conference dates. * Please send each submission as a separate file to simion@math.gwu.edu. CALL FOR SOFTWARE DEMONSTRATIONS * Demonstrations of software relevant to the subjects of the conference are invited. * Participants interested in giving software demonstrations are asked to contact Rodica Simion, simion@math.gwu.edu, and to discuss technical considerations with Jennifer Katinsky, jak@dimacs.rutgers.edu, by March 31. PARTICIPANT SUPPORT * Limited funds are available for partial support of participants, in particular for junior researchers and graduate students. * Requests for support should include a statement of interest, the intended duration of conference participation, estimated transportation expenses, and the amount of support available from other sources. * Requests from graduate students should also include a letter of recommendation. * For full consideration, requests for support should be received by March 4 at the following address: Rodica Simion, Department of Mathematics, The George Washington University, Washington, DC 20052, USA, FAX (202) 994-6760. FURTHER INFORMATION ** The first lecture will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 23, in the Hill Center (Busch Campus of Rutgers University), ground floor, Lecture Hall, Room 114. The registration desk will open at 8:00 a.m., in the lobby near the Lecture Hall. The last lecture on Friday, May 27, will end around 5 p.m. ** Further information, updated periodically, is available via anonymous ftp from dimacs.rutgers.edu (IP:128.6.75.16) in the directory ``pub/FPSAC-94'': reading lists recommended by the invited speakers, problem session submissions received in advance of the conference, detailed directions to the conference site and hotels, information about social events for conference participants.
