Hi, I am Ira Friedman. I taught mathematics at East Islip High School in
Islip Terrace, NY. I retired on June, 2000, after teaching for 36 years. I
moved to Chapel Hill, NC in 2000.
I now live in The Villages, Fl in central Florida. I had been involved in the North
Carolina School of Science and Mathematics "Lead Teacher in Precalculus
and Calculus Program". This involves using labs and a discovery approach
in the teaching of mathematics. All students in my honors precalculus class had
to donate 20 hours of service at a community business. They were required to
utilize the mathematics covered in the class during this work endeavor. My
expertise is in Matrices, using Markov Chains to do things like taxi
dispatching problems. Also, I use Leslie Matrices to solve population problems.
In addition, I have some practical "Real World" uses of mathematics
learned at Fermilab, when I was a TRAC (Teacher Research Associate) in 1994,
1996 and 1997. During the summer of 1999, I was a PREP teacher researcher at
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I did research in the
Molecular Beam Epitaxy Lab under Dr. Frank Tsui. My topic was "Correlation
Function of Topographical Images for Studying Epitaxial Growth". I spent
one year as a screener for applications at the University of North Carolina. I
am now retired in The Villages, Florida.
Here's some of the things I do on:
I enjoy being with my wife and making people smile.
Last, but not least, I love visiting my daughter Mindy, son Rob, daughter-in-law Patricia, granddaughter Madeline and grandson Jack in Atlanta,GA, as well as my son Perry in Las Vegas.
