Part 1:
- Create a folder on your desktop called public_html
- Find and open the FTP application Fetch.
- From the FIle menu choose "New Connection" and enter
- Host: discrete-math.rutgers.edu
- User ID:username
- Password:*******
- Directory: leave this blank
- Click on "PUT" and transfer your public_html folder to your directory.
|
Part 1:
- The exact name is very important as it will allow others access to your web page.
- Using a PC you will use a different FTP application that works in a similar manner.
- If your email account is @dimacs.rutgers.edu you will use
dimacs.rutgers.edu as your host. Use your own username and password.
If you do not have an account on one of these servers you may continue with making your web page
but you should save it to a disk.
- If you already have a public_html folder you can skip this step.
|
Part 2:
- While viewing the template in Netscape,
choose "VIEW PAGE SOURCE"
- A simple text document will open on your desk top.
- Make changes to the template. Start simple, just put in your name.
- Save the file with the changes to your computer with the name
index.html. This name is very important. It will determine your
web page address (URL)
- You can open this file in Netscape to view the changes that you have made, but others will not
see the changes until you save the file to the server.
|
Part 2:
- You will find "view page source" under the view menu on the top menu bar.
- If using a PC the file will open in notepad or similar application.
- You will repeat this step a number of times.
- Be sure you know where you are saving the file. I recommend putting it on your
newly created public_html folder for now.
- By the server I mean, discrete-math.rutgers.edu, dimacs.rutgers.edu or your school
server or local service provider's server.
|
Part 3:
- Switch back to Fetch and check to be sure you are still connected to the server.
- Put your file on the server
- press the PUT button
- locate your newly created "index.html" file
- choose to save it as a text file
|
Part 3:
- You may need to repeat steps 2 and 3 if your connection is no longer active.
- Your web page files must end in "html" and they will always be saved as text. Later when
you add graphics to your web page, the "gifs" and "jpegs" will be saved as raw data but the web
page will still be saved as text.
|
Part 4:
- Switch to Netscape. Open your homepage. Your web address will be:
http://discrete.rutgers.edu/~username/
or
http://dimacs.rutgers.edu/~username/
|
Part 4:
- You can repeat steps 5 through 12 until you are satisfied with your page.

Have Fun!
