  • Abstract: Some freshmen actually believe that (a+b)^p=a^p+b^p, but most of them know that it is false, but wished that it were true. Nevertheless, if you take it modulo p, where p is a prime, it is true! This elementary, almost trivial, fact, has some surprising and beautiful consequences, for example for counting cellular automata (joint with Neil Sloane), deep congruence identities (joint with William Chen and Qing-Hu Hou), and the latter has been beautifully extended by my former PhD student , Moa Apagodu.
