  • Abstract: The discrepancy of a set system (a set of subsets of a finite set) is the extent to which the elements can be colored with, say, red and blue so that each set in the system has as little imbalance as possible between colors. This talk concerns set systems known as permutation families which, on their own, have very low discrepancy, but when as few as three are combined have surprisingly large discrepancy (logarithmic in the number of elements). We will discuss a simple proof of this fact, as well as an open problem.
