1. Program Overview
DIMACS, the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer
Science, is a Science and Technology Center, funded by the NSF, with
long-term participation from Rutgers University, Princeton University,
AT&T Research, Bell Laboratories, and Bellcore. Research and education
activities at DIMACS focus on such areas as analysis of algorithms,
combinatorics, complexity, computational algebra, computational
biology, discrete and computational geometry, discrete optimization and
graph theory.
Graduate study forms a central part of the research and education mission of
DIMACS.
Students involved in research are invited to apply as
Graduate Study Fellows
with an emphasis on flexibility and tailoring participation to
enhance the graduate students' program of study.
DIMACS welcomes graduate students applications to visit for
periods of a week up to a year.
Visits may range from shorter visits that encompass workshops up to
semester or year-long visits in conjunction with Special Years or
DIMACS Projects.
A student whose advisor will be on sabbatical may wish to visit DIMACS
to interact with other graduate students, postdoctoral associates, members and
visitors. Graduate students and advisors may apply together.
Only students at non-DIMACS institutions (i.e. not Princeton or Rutgers) may
apply for such support.
Upcoming Special Years and Projects include:
- Massive Data Sets (1997-98) focusing on
topics such as very large databases, large scientific (geological,
ecological, astronomical, etc.) datasets,
geometric data, data mining,
multi-level memory models, re-organizing very large data sets,
and visualization
- Discrete Probability (1996-97)
focusing on parts of probability
and statistical mechanics dealing with topics of an essentially discrete
nature (e.g. percolation,
random walks and Markov chains, particle systems, branching processes).
- Networks (1996-98) focusing
on topics such as security, network applications and electronic
commerce, network design, and network routing and control.
- Mathematical and Computational Support for Molecular Biology
(1994-97)
including sequencing, mapping, phylogeny, protein folding,
and biomolecular computing.
- Simulations (1995-98)
including discrete event simulation, hierarchical
techniques for heterogeneous systems, algorithmic foundations of
simulation including distributed data structures, parallel
random number generation, etc.; and
simulations studies of broadband digital networks.
See Special Years
and
Simulations Project for information about these initiatives.
Graduate Students interested in these focused activities or in
visiting to conduct research with DIMACS scientists are
strongly urged to contact the permanent members to
discuss their interests and possible collaborations.
See Members Listing for
a list of DIMACS permanent members, their research interests
and contact information.
Graduate Study fellowship support may consist of monthly
subsistence payment or stipend, travel to and
from the Center, and the payment of local institutional charges if
tuition is needed. For students
visiting for a semester or longer,
support will also be provided either for the
advisor to visit the student or vice versa.

3. Check List for Applying
To help the selection committee, please be sure that all your materials
are included before sending your application, and please be concise and
observe the page limits.
- Cover sheet with contact information (form attached below)
- Current CV or resume.
- Statement of research plans while at DIMACS (2p MAX)
Explain how DIMACS resources or collaborations with
DIMACS members will benefit you, and how you hope to contribute
to the research life here.
If applying as part of a special year or focus program,
explain how tutorials, workshops, seminars and other special year / focus
events will benefit your plans and what you have to bring to the program.
- Letter(s) of recommendation (sent separately)
For up to 1-month visits, a single letter from the advisor will
suffice. For all other applications, please provide 3 letters.
