Great article! I really enjoyed reading it. Where will this piece appear?
I can relate to everything you wrote. Nice job!
I would like to take the opportunity to announce that the Math Forum now has
a new Problem of the Week called the Discrete Math POW
http://forum.swarthmore.edu/dmpow
I hope you will all at least take a look and check out the problems each
week. Monday's problem is a "game" that I think would make a wonderful
first day activity or even a back to school activity for parents. Something
for them to fiddle around with while you tell them about your grading system
and curriculum. :>)
Oh, by the way, I am the Project Manager for this new site, so I am looking
for Discrete Math problems to post and to add to my bank of questions. If
you have some problems that you would like to see posted, especially during
the week you may be doing this or something you plan to offer as extra
credit, say on a test, but the problem needs more time, you can have it as a
Problem of the Week and send your students to the site. I am sure there are
many school districts that are requiring a technology element in their
curricula. Here is a great way to integrate this into your lessons.
The Math Forum is offering lots of services for teachers regarding the
Problem of the Week sites of which there are now six besides all the other
wonderful stuff they are doing for teachers. For example, if you have your
students submit answers on a more or less regular basis we can keep a "grade
book" for you and you can actually track when the last time your students
submitted answers, how many they had correct or hilighted, and lots of other
stuff.
Anyway, I hope to hear from you not only for some discrete math problems but
just to let me know what you all are doing. Anybody else "retiring"? I
could use some help with mentors.
As ever,
Ethel
