2009 Institutes for New Teachers

August 3-7, 2009

  • Institute for New Mathematics Teachers (6-12)
  • Institute for New Science Teachers (6-12)

Attend these institutes and you will:

Be better prepared to teach your classes in the fall:

  • You will work in small groups with expert teachers and supervisors
  • You will review your school's curriculum materials and discuss how they can best be used and supplemented

Be better able to excite and motivate your students to do math and science:

  • You will focus on hands-on activities, problem solving, demonstrations, and real-world applications
  • You will discuss how to respond to different student learning styles in math and science

Be more confident in starting the school year:

  • You will leave the program with materials for immediate use in your classroom
  • You will develop lesson plans for the first month of school

Be part of a network of new teachers with a shared experience:

  • You will work with teachers who are at the same point in their careers as you are
  • You will meet experienced teachers and supervisors who can help you during the school year
 

What Are The New Teachers Institutes?

The New Teachers Institutes are week-long, content-based, residential programs designed to prepare new teachers for their teaching assignments in the coming year and give them a great start in their teaching careers. The institute staff, who are experienced supervisors and teachers of mathematics and science, will work closely with participants to respond to their particular instructional needs.

Who Should Attend?

For those who will be teaching mathematics and/or science at the high school or middle school level for the first time in the fall of 2009 or those who have at most three years of prior teaching experience. Alternate route candidates are welcome!

Where Are They Held?

Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Meals will be provided on-campus. Lodging (double-occupancy) will be available at a nearby hotel.

When Are The Institutes?

  • August 3-7, 2009: Science Institute
  • August 3-7, 2009: Math Institute

What Is The Cost?

Expected cost is $1,650 (with lodging, $1,795) per participant. Teachers should ask their districts to subsidize their participation. NEW for 2009.... Option to attend just three days of institute (Science institute only). Cost is $1,000 for three days (lodging not included). Tentative schedule available soon.

Is Credit Offered?

Three graduate credits are available to participants who attend the program, pay additional tuition and fees, and complete additional course requirements. Credit will be awarded for the summer session 2009. There will be an informational meeting about graduate credit during the institute week.

Participants will receive 41 professional development hours for their participation in this program.
