Plenary Session: It's Instruction, Silly: Making a Real Difference in Student Achievement

Steven Leinwand, American Institutes for Research (AIR)

When all is said and done, itís not the textbooks or the curriculum or the technology or the tests Ė itís the instruction. Despite all the attention to other factors, the primary determinant of learning is the quality of the daily interaction between teachers and students and among students. This session will look at a set of easy-to-adopt, powerful instructional strategies that research and common sense tell us make significant differences in student achievement.

Steve Leinwand is a Principal Research Analyst at AIR and has over 25 years of leadership positions in mathematics education. His recent work at AIR has included "What the United States Can Learn from Singapore's World-Class Mathematics System (and what Singapore can learn from the United States)." Before joining AIR in 2002, Leinwand spent 22 years as Mathematics Consultant with the Connecticut Department of Education where he was responsible for the development and oversight of statewide activities in K-12 mathematics education. Steve has served on the Mathematical Sciences Education Board, as president of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and on the NCTM Board of Directors. He has written numerous articles and several textbooks; his book, Sensible Mathematics: A Guide for School Leaders was published by Heinemann in 2000.
