DIMACS is the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science. It was founded in 1989 as an NSF funded Science and Technology Center (STC) and one of the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology’s Advanced Technology Centers.

It is headquartered in the CoRE (Computing Research and Education) Building on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University.

The broad mission of DIMACS is to catalyze and conduct research and education in mathematical, computational, and statistical methods, algorithms, modeling, analysis, and applications.

What we do

DIMACS facilitates research, education, and outreach in discrete mathematics, computer science theory, algorithms, mathematical and statistical methods, and their applications. Our multi-year special focus programs address research themes that require topical expertise in these areas, have potential for societal impact, and are poised for advance. Our education programs include materials development for high school and college classrooms, an extensive summer undergraduate research program, and teacher training programs. DIMACS also leads CCICADA, a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence that is developing and applying new methods in data analysis to improve security.

Who we are

DIMACS is a multi-institution partnership led by Rutgers University. It includes over 350 members at Rutgers and elsewhere who work together with DIMACS staff to organize and implement DIMACS programs in research, education, and outreach.

How we operate

Several important committees help us plan future programs and execute current ones. DIMACS is governed by an Executive Committee and informed by a Council comprised of representatives from partner institutions. It is guided in strategic planning by an external Advisory Board. Several other committees help to organize special foci and carry out other DIMACS programs.

Location and Directions

DIMACS’s main offices are located on the fourth floor of the CoRE Building on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University.
