Even though cellular telephony, despite many shortcomings, has become enormously popular, cellular data communication remains a niche player. Generations of digital cellular systems - 2G, 2-1/2G and 3G - have been advertised as the long-awaited enabler of serious mobile computing, but data users aren't buying the story. Now we're told that 4G - Fourth Generation Cellular - really is the answer. In this talk I describe what 4G is (or might be) and discuss whether or not it's the answer we want to hear.
